Nebulae come in many varieties.
Diffuse, emission, reflection and dark are terms used to describe most nebulae. Some
nebulae are star forming regions. While others may be the cast-off outer layers
of a star nearing the end of its life. Before
Edwin Hubble helped to prove otherwise, the word nebula had been used to describe nearly any extended object in the
visible universe
including most galaxies.
