MESSIER OBJECT 1 - THE CRAB NEBULA  a supernova remnant located about 6,000 light years distant towards the direction of the constellation Taurus. At the center of the supernova is a pulsar...a neutron star spinning at more than 30 times per second.

This Supernova became visible in the daytime sky for three weeks and was documented by Chinese astronomers as occurring on July 4th, 1054. Subsequently, it remained a noticeable presence in the night sky for about a full year. Here in the southwest, the Chacoans are also believed to have documented this event in petroglyph art on a rock outcrop in Chaco Canyon.

Imaged October 15th 2004 at Tres Placitas Observatory Santa Fe, NM with ST-7ME with the Astrodon Tru-balance color filter set attached to a Takahashi FS 102 at f/7.9.
